Million searches are made online looking for quick methods to shed those extra pounds. What’s more is that many people turn to fad diets so they can lose weight immediately.

Fad diets come in and out of trend. Some work to some extent as the body is being restricted to the amount of food consumed. However, fad diets only have temporary effects and can also be dangerous to your health. These crazy ideas fall into “why on Earth would someone do these things to themselves” when the right way to achieve your desired weight is to have a balanced diet and daily exercise. 1. Hard Boiled Egg Diet

Making a hard-boiled egg is very simple and one contains only 60 – 70 calories. It has been followed by Nicole Kidman for the movie “Cold Mountain.” This may sound like a perfect diet plan as you can eat three eggs throughout the day and you will only get 180 to 210 calories. However, this odd diet deprives the body of the essential nutrients that can be obtained from the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables.

The egg diet makes it almost impossible to perform daily exercises as it does not offer enough energy.  In addition to lethargy, this diet can also lead to gas and constipation.

2. Grapefruit Juice Diet

The grapefruit juice diet has been around since 1930 and it claims dieters could lose up to 10 pounds for only 12 days. However, we cannot survive with this juice alone and this diet requires participants to lessen their food consumption to less than 1,000 calories per day. You can eat foods rich in protein such as bacon, salad dressings, butter, and eggs. Dieters need to drink at least 8 oz. of fresh grapefruit juice every meal.

Grapefruit is packed with vitamin C and may sound like a healthy meal plan. However, this method also advocates dieters to eat until you are stuffed. Creators believe that this juice will simply burn off the fats.

According to Kathleen Zelman, MPH, RD, grapefruit does not burn fat. There are studies about the relationship of grapefruit and weight loss and it may be the water content in the fruit that makes you feel full. This results to less food consumption but the grapefruit does not melt the fats. Zelman also mentioned that losing 10 pounds within 10 days is not healthy as dieters would be likely to gain it all back [1].

3. Lemonade Diet

This diet is a 10-day weight loss plan that aims to flush out all toxins from the body. Said to have been followed by many famous actors and actresses today, the lemonade diet (made from lemon, cayenne pepper, and maple syrup) reduces alcohol and junk food cravings.

One of the outrageous fad diets, the body is completely deprived of solid foods. Dieters can only consume six to ten glasses of lemonade a day along with a laxative at night and salt water in the morning. This diet was originally made by Stanley Burroughs in 1950’s. However, Burroughs was charged with murder for trying to treat a patient with this diet.

Years after the introduction, this diet continues as one of the popular detox diet programs and many celebrities, including Beyoncé, have used this to get rid of unwanted pounds.

4. The Sleeping Beauty Diet

The Sleeping Beauty diet has been made famous by Elvis Presley. Of course, you cannot eat if you are not awake. Most of us find it hard to sleep with an empty stomach, so participants look for a doctor that will sedate them for a few hours or days. This prevents them from craving for their favorite dishes and desserts.

This extreme diet deprives the body of essential vitamins, minerals, and physical movement for long hours or days. Taking sleeping pills as a weight loss plan is never a good thing and it is definitely not good for the heart and all vital organs. It is always recommended by experts to exercise daily to improve blood circulation.

5. The Gluten-Free Diet

Gluten-free diet was first created to help people suffering from celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder in which the body reacts to gluten as if it were toxic.

Today, it has become one of the diet plants that many people practice in order to achieve their desired weight. Most people who are in this diet claim that eating gluten-free makes them feel less weary. This could be due to the absence of carbs and refined sugar.

In this diet, you are required to eliminate or reduce the consumption of pastas, breads, and high-card junk foods. You can eat rice starch or potatoes instead. The gluten-free diet can help you lose weight. However, this deprives the body of essential nutrients such as zinc, iron, folate and fiber. Lack of gluten in the diet may also affect cardiovascular system [2].

6. The hCG Diet

In this outrageous fat diet, people are being injected with hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), a hormone that the body produces naturally during pregnancy. These shots are only legal if recommended and administered by a health care professional.

Those who are following this diet are encouraged to take hCG pellets, drops and sprays. These are all illegal according to FDA. Some side effects of taking pregnancy hormones and other illegal substances include irritability, fatigue, and depression. Men and boys may also experience swelling of the breasts. People who are following this low calorie diet are likely to lose weight in a period of time. However, it may also lead to gallstones, blood clots, and irregular heartbeat [3].

7. The Twinkie Diet

Twinkies have been invented in the 1930s, but the origin of this fad diet is unknown. Each pack of Twinkies contains 150 calories and eating only this food throughout the day can help you lose weight. Some people believe that it works as even if you eat 10 pieces a day, you only get 1,500 calories.

This diet may help you lose weight but it deprives the body of essential vitamins and nutrients. It can affect the function of your bodily systems, making you feel lethargic throughout the day. You will also get tired of the taste of Twinkies fast.

8. The Cotton Ball Diet

One of the weirdest fat diets that you have probably heard of is the cotton ball diet. The practice of this diet has started in the modeling industry and it involves dipping three to five cotton balls in orange juice. These cotton balls are being swallowed to reduce hunger and cravings.

Eating cotton and other inconsumable substances can be dangerous. People who are following this far diet may experience choking and blocking in their digestive tract. Some of these obstructions may require a surgery in order to be removed. Nowadays, most cotton balls are a mass of synthetic and bleached fibers that are not easily digested by the body.

In addition to higher risk of developing health problems, this diet will also lead to malnutrition as the body is deprived of essential vitamins and minerals. It is important to provide the body enough nutrients in order to function effectively.

9. The Blood Type Diet

This diet claims that the body’s nutritional requirements depend on your blood type. Developed by Dr. Peter D’Adamo, the Blood Type diet book became a New York Times bestseller. It explains why some can easily shed excess weight while others find it difficult while following the same diet.

The followers of this diet have experienced an increase energy level, better digestion, and weight loss. Some also reported that some symptoms associated with heartburn, asthma, and headaches have been reduced.  Dr. D’Adamo also claims that our digestive and immune systems favor the types of foods our ancestors consumed.

However, the blood type diet lacks supporting evidence. No studies have showed the health effects of ABO blood type diets were identified [4].

10. The Tapeworm Diet

A draconian way of losing weight, the tapeworm diet is one of the shocking fad diets that we have found during our research. This involves taking a capsule that contains tapeworm eggs. These parasites hatch and grow inside the digestive tract and absorb some of the food and nutrients from your body.

According to Mayo Clinic, the common symptoms of intestinal parasitic infection are nausea, diarrhea, weight loss, weakness, loss of appetite, and malnutrition. If tapeworm larvae have migrated out of the intestines, they can cause tissue and organ damage that result in cystic masses, fever, bacterial infections, allergic reactions to larvae, and neurological signs and symptoms such as seizures [5].

In addition to serious medical health conditions, this fad diet can lead to disordered eating habits and malnutrition.

The best way to lose weight is to have a balanced diet. It is important to provide the body essential vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients for it to function properly. Regular exercise can also be performed if the body has enough energy to consume.
