What does it do?

Garcinia Slim proves itself to be one of the more popular supplements available today. Despite being relatively new to the market, the product has gained steam quickly due to the marketing team placing heavy emphasis on the inclusion of Garcinia Cambogia as an ingredient.

Garcinia Slim claims to assist in the suppression of appetite and helps consumers to lose weight in an all-natural manner (despite the inclusion of some synthetic ingredients) [1]. The product was originally marketed by the company JaDera as a “revolutionary dietary supplement”.

Consistent use of the supplement is meant to allow any individual to drop extra weight at a rapid pace. The supplement also claims to be effective without you, the consumer, having to take part in any tough workouts.

This is an offer that should be impossible to meet, especially when the product also claims to have no common side effects.

Evidence: What’s in It?

The ingredients of Garcinia Slim are a mixture of both natural and synthetic additives.

It is nice to see that the main ingredient in this supplement is Garcinia Cambogia as the product's branding pushes this ingredient on us so heavily.

Garcinia Cambogia itself is a tropical fruit. The active ingredient in this fruit is HCA (hydroxy citric acid) that is found in the rind [2]. HCA is claimed to block the enzyme citrate lyase, which is essential in the metabolic pathway your body uses to make fat for excess energy storage [3]. HCA is also meant to raise the levels of serotonin in the body, suppressing appetite [4].

However, the actual weight loss results are not impressive [5]. This is unsurprising, seeing as most of the scientific studies showing the effectiveness of Garcinia Cambogia as a weight-loss product are derived from animal models. The small volume of research that has been performed using this ingredient in humans shows marginal benefits of its supplementation [6].

Other Ingredients:

Green tea

Seen as a detox tea by many, green tea is known to ‘cleanse the body from within’. This statement has little hard fact behind it, however.

To start with, you should learn to always be cautious around any product claiming to “cleanse” your body. The only things you should be relying on to remove toxins from your body are your liver and kidneys – not something about green juices and apple cider vinegar that you read on the internet.

Secondly, we should take a closer look at Green Tea Catechins. These are four molecules that are present in high amounts in green tea. The most potent of these is EGCG. It is these molecules which play a role in making green tea effective with respect to most claims of its capacity to be beneficial in weight loss [7].

The volumes of green tea needed for an effect on weight and metabolism to become measurable are high – the quantities found in Garcinia Slim are nowhere near enough. Adding to this the fact that a lot of green tea weight loss effects rely on the user being “caffeine-naive” and the whole idea starts to become questionable [8].

Cayenne pepper

The spice from chili-peppers has been found to have a metabolism boosting effect for a small duration of time following consumption [9]. The trace amounts of cayenne pepper found within Garcinia Slim are unlikely to be substantial enough to cause this increased calorie burn. In fact, you would get just as much benefit from eating peppers (this would probably add greater nutritional value and cost less too!).

The effects of cayenne (capsaicin) are also smaller than the manufactures of many weightless supplements would have us believe. Boosting your caloric burn by no more than 50 calories per day, it’s going to take you a long time to see the effects of this one.


Caffeine is a metabolism boosting ingredient that does actually work. However, this is not going to increase the metabolic rate or suppress appetite any more than your daily cup of coffee.

Caffeine does have many benefits to its consumption. Boosting your metabolism and helping you to burn up to 100 calories per day, and having noticeable benefits to energy levels, concentration times and even mood for many of us – why wouldn’t you be using it? We still suggest enjoying your caffeine as a beverage over taking it as a pill (black coffee is better and better for you) [10].

Care with dosage must be taken, however. Stimulant overload can have some serious, and unfortunate, side effects. If you notice anything unusual after caffeine consumption you should discontinue use and discuss the changes with your doctor.

White willow [11]

In combination with Garcinia Cambogia, the white willow in the Garcinia slim supplement is said to ease body pain. This is aimed at allowing individuals to take part in increased levels of exercise during their weight loss regime without inhibition from muscle aches and pains. This is an odd addition when it is stated that exercise is not necessary for the product to work.

There is no scientific value to these claims about the functions of white willow. There are supplements you can take to help with muscle repair, and therefore aches and pains if you plan on increasing your exercise volumes. The most effective of these tend to be amino acids such as creatinine and beta-alanine [12].


Considered to be densely packed with nutrients, dandelion is included in order to ‘replenish the body with lost powerhouses’ [13]. Not only does this statement not make any scientific sense, but it also fails to address the fact that healthy weight loss and a healthy balanced diet should include all your essential nutrients in the first place.

Excellent alternatives to this would be supplementing a balanced diet with Spirulina [14] or Supergreen powders. Alternatively, you could just work on upping your fruit and veg consumption, which will also provide you the extra fiber you need for digestive health.


Believed to curb blood sugar levels and suppress cravings for carbohydrates, this ingredient might be the only thing worthwhile about the Garcinia Slim supplement.

Chromium is used to improve blood sugar control in patients with Type 1 and 2 diabetes, it does this by improving the manner in which our body uses insulin.

As this ingredient is medically licensed and well-researched, it’s validity cannot be disputed. However, for chromium supplementation to have any beneficial effect, an individual must be affected by 2 independent conditions:

  1. Be diabetic
  2. Be chromium deficient

Studies show no benefit to non-diabetic patients and no effect in diabetic patients unless they’re chromium deficient [15].

Closing Remarks: Does It Work?

None of the claimed benefits of Garcinia Slim have been proven to be true or are backed by any scientific study.

A product that is said to be able to curb cravings, suppress appetite and stop fat tissues generation, is likely to achieve very little. The overall benefits of this product are comparable to a few cups of black coffee and a few cups of green tea (or one matcha).

Overall, we can’t recommend this product. Garcinia cambogia is the main ingredient and we have some pretty definitive proof that it’s bunk. We’re more surprised by the fact that it continues to sell and retain popularity when there’s no real benefit to its consumption.
