Alpha Fuel XT Review 

Alpha Fuel XT probably shouldn't be described as a weight loss supplement. This product is a testosterone booster and is, therefore, more aimed at building lean muscle in its consumers than having a direct impact on fat loss [1,2].

Our suspicions regarding this supplement automatically arose upon hearing this piece of information. More than half of all testosterone boosters on the market have very little to no clinical support.

What is it?

The label on the bottle describes Alpha Fuel XT as a ‘testosterone support supplement’, claiming the product will aid bodybuilding through increased and healthy levels of free testosterone.

The manufacturer of Alpha Fuel XT is a company by the name of ‘Science of Alpha’ – this can probably tell you something about their target audience. The client profile that Alpha Fuel XT is angled towards is clearly young males looking to build more muscle mass in the gym, a big target audience and a highly lucrative one if done correctly. Gyms are full of individuals looking for faster results, often with little time to put into the research of these supplements. If you can advertise well and get some positive customer reviews – you’re in.

Science of Alpha places some heavy emphasis upon the ZMA trio and the inclusion of piperine within their product. ZMA is marketed as the holy grail for athletes and improved performance in the gym. Piperine, a black pepper extract, is said to increase the bio-availability of the supplement's components and therefore absorption and efficacy of Alpha Fuel XT.

Does it Work?

ZMA Trio

A recovery aiding patented formula containing zinc, magnesium and vitamin B6, ZMA is always highly recommended for athlete supplementation. Alpha Fuel XT claims all three of the trios’ components are lost in sweat, leaving athletes who undergo intense training. It is Zinc that is mainly impacted by this set of problems[3,4,5].

Claimed to be testosterone boosting but there is no evidence to suggest this would have an impact on healthy men. In zinc deficiency – yes

Zinc is lost through sweat so for athletes that don’t eat enough of the right food, supplementation can be useful
There is too little magnesium in this supplement to have any impact.

B6(aspartate) has also been claimed to increase testosterone but it's completely missing from the formula in this supplement

The ‘man-enhancing’ patented mixture

  • Oat straw

Although Alpha Fuel XT claims to contain oat straw due to its protein and vitamin content, realistically this ingredient is only here as a bulking agent – the manufacturer is just trying to make it sound more useful than it is[6].

This component of Alpha Fuel XT is just powdered oats. It’s nothing special, and it isn’t present in nowhere near the correct quantity that would be required to have the reported health impact.

  • Long Jack

Eurycoma Longifolia Jack, or Long Jack, has been used historically as a herbal remedy to support male sexual function and virility. These effects can be considered quite reliable as they have been shown to span a large variety of animal models [7].

Along with the aphrodisiac effects, Long Jack is shown to increase sperm production and other secondary male sex characteristics. However, hormonally, Long Jack does not have any human studies behind it to validate its value as an oral supplement that boosts testosterone.

The literature appears to be needlessly promising at first glance, with many citations referring back to presentations by an M.I. Tambi [8]. In fact, none of Dr.Tambi’s research presents us with claims that can be proven, and no peer-reviewed evidence currently establishes Long Jack as a testosterone booster.

Long Jack does appear to have remarkable anti-estrogen effects – but these have only been tested and proven in-vitro. The potency of the ingredient within a human model still awaits assessment.

  • Mucuna

Mucuna Pruriens, also known as ‘Velvet bean’ is an excellent source of L-DOPA. L-DOPA. Being a precursor to the hormone dopamine, they claim that this ingredient will act as a testosterone boosting agent because it has an indirect effect on lowered cortisol levels and a reduced stress response [9].

The likelihood is that L-DOPA is supplemented orally via Alpha Fuel XT but is never actually going to make it into your system [10]. L-DOPA in Mucuna will be broken down and destroyed both through cooking and preparation of the bean and during the digestive process.

So, although changes in sperm quality can be seen following regular Mucuna ingestion, these changes are likely completely independent of L-DOPAs actions and an increase in testosterone production.

  • Diindolylmethane

Diindolylmethane is an aromatase inhibitor[11]. A small amount of this ingredient possesses the ability to inhibit aromatase enzyme, which prevents the conversion of testosterone into estrogen, therefore theoretically boosting testosterone levels.

This ingredient can also convert forms of estrogen into less potent forms. A reduction of estrogen levels in comparison to those of testosterone is beneficial when it comes to increased lean muscle growth.

There is one major issue though, the dosage curve of DIM is one that needs to be considered very carefully before supplementation. Too much DIM can have the opposite of its desired effect and induce the aromatase enzyme as well as increase the volume of testosterone converted into the female hormone estrogen [12, 13].

DIM is found naturally within brassicas, so there is a strong argument that a whole foods approach is a much better one to take when trying to obtain this compound. When the dosage needs to be so precise, it’s asking for trouble by adding extra DIM into your diet via a pill, instead eating more kale, broccoli or cabbage, which will provide you with extra DIM, extra vitamins while also allowing excess DIM to be more easily flushed from your system as it has been obtained in a natural, high fiber, manner.

  • Nettle

Nettle is an excellent anti-inflammatory when consumed as tea or soup. Its inclusion within Alpha Fuel XT is due to claims that nettle can boost testosterone – these claims are false, however. No evidence exists to suggest these claims to be accurate. After a 6-month long study where participants consumed stinging nettle root thrice daily, testosterone levels were shown to remain un-effected[14, 15].

  • Tribulus Terrestris

This root is another herbal remedy that comes in the form of a plant root. Tribulus Terrestris is shown to be a mild aphrodisiac[16] but is yet another example of a well-being drug masked as a testosterone boosting compound. Male sex characteristics and libido can be enhanced independently of male hormones, and it’s important to keep this in mind when looking at many of the ingredients within Alpha Fuel XT.

  • Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is a traditional supplement, which is primarily used for its ability to reduce levels of anxiety experienced by individuals who consume it. Any effect on testosterone levels that this ingredient has will be those that take place indirectly through lower cortisol levels and a calmed stress response.

This ingredient is unlikely to make any difference to testosterone levels. While well-being and libido might be increased, this is probably down to reduced stress levels themselves rather than other hormone alterations[17].

  • Piperine

Piperine is found within black pepper and its inclusion within this supplement is down to claims that it has an ability to boost absorption rates of a variety of compounds in the body.

Piperine, in fact, inhibits glucuronidation in the liver. This is a process in which the biological marker glucuronide is attached to various compounds and drugs to mark them for urinary excretion. The process acts naturally to prevent excessive accumulation of drug products in the body[18, 19].

Piperine’s effects are selective, however, it can sometimes inhibit all uptake of a substance and render certain supplements useless – the benefit of this one depends upon what it is you are trying to absorb.

If you are taking any prescription medications, additional supplementation of piperine might best be avoided due to its potential to elevate the levels of drugs in the bloodstream.

Practicalities and Market Alternatives

Alpha Fuel XT is readily available to buy online and in retail stores, including purchasing it from Science of Alpha directly.

The supplement is sold in a bottle of 60 capsules, and given the recommended dosage of 1 capsule, twice daily, this equates to a month’s supply for $69.75. That means you would be paying roughly $2.30 a day for any extra muscle growth that Alpha Fuel XT is giving you.

Is this worth it for the results we feel you’re likely to see? Unlikely.

Closing Remarks

If something positive can be said, it’s that the natural ingredients within Alpha Fuel XT are nice to see, and this alongside several positive customer reviews, does give the supplement some hope within its market.

But it is difficult for us to feel happy giving this product the green light when the formula is not on any level proven to be clinically effective.

While ZMA addresses the purpose of the product well, you can’t build a better body without proper nutrition.
As for the proprietary blend of ‘male-targeting’ ingredients, the dose is unfortunately low. Research carried out on each of these ingredients is found time and time again to elicit minor beneficial effects unless the dosage is high. 655g for all these ingredients is simply not enough for any of them to have the desired effects.

In our opinion, Alpha Fuel XT will not likely boost your testosterone levels, you are more likely to experience improvement in secondary sex characteristics independently or on hormone levels.
